"Infiltrators" In the typical residential septic system the whole process of digestion and conversion is accomplished using bacteria that are anaerobic, or bacteria that work best without the aid of oxygen. They often smell pretty bad, but work very well. Another kind of bacteria work best using oxygen in the secondary stage of the breakdown process of waste material. They are called aerobic bacteria, and their odors usually aren't as offensive. Aerobic systems usually require a lot of open space in the ground and a vent through the system to the outside atmosphere. Here are some photos of a system we installed with an aerobic secondary stage drain field. The sections of the system are made of interconnecting plastic segments which allow the wastewater to flow through them and deposit it along the way. The septic tank is connected to a distribution box and the process uses conveyance lines similar to the traditional aerobic system.
The aerobic system infiltrators are buried in sand instead of stone and a vent pipe is installed at the end.
