Pipe Bursting

Pipe bursting is a very efficient way of replacing an old existing pipe.  Old pipes that constantly leak or get clogged to the point where they need to be totally replaced are excellent candidates for pipe bursting.  In this process a wedge is pulled through the old pipe by a strong cable attached to our drill rig.  On the end of the wedge is attached the new polyethylene replacement pipe.  This pipe can be smaller, the same size or larger than the original pipe.  The wedge and the new pipe follow the old one destroying it as they go, and when finished join to the old system in a manhole or other connection.  This process can be used in sewer, water, conduit and drain applications.

Here is a picture of a bursting tool attached to a length of black polyethylene pipe ready to be installed from manhole to manhole in a sewer application at a religious facility in Tewksbury.

In this application we had plenty of room so we laid out our pipe in a straight line with the path of the old one.

Our cable was inserted in the receiving manhole and pulled through to the starting manhole.  A access was made in the starting manhole so we could begin the pull smoothly.

This is the beginning of the pull from the starting manhole into the old pipe.

As you can see there is very little disturbance above ground.  This project required us to replace the old pipe without disturbing several patios, sitting areas and statues on the grounds.

This is the old pipe (top) before it was replaced.  This picture shows the old pipe entering the receiving manhole compartment from right to left.

This picture shows the bursting tool as it breaks the old pipe and begins to enter the receiving manhole compartment.

This is a picture of the completed replacement.  This installation was very cost efficient to our customer in time and money.  If this had been done using the open trench method it would have taken a lot more time, made a huge mess and would have required the destruction and rebuilding of the entire garden area.
